The pending closure, which will be phased in over a two-year period, was announced to employees this afternoon.
Market Region Manager – Pacific, ASSA ABLOY Asia Pacific, Christer Peterson said to remain competitive, ASSA ABLOY Australia needs to restructure and redevelop.
“A new manufacturing footprint must be established so the company can continue to provide high quality security solutions in Australia.
“While current market trends and commercial viability directs ASSA ABLOY Australia to reinvent its business model – it’s regrettable that the Brisbane manufacturing activity must cease.
“However Australian operations are here to stay,” he said.
Mr Peterson confirmed Brisbane will retain its sales, marketing, customer support, product development and local distribution facilities.
“Local manufacturing activities will be restructured and aligned with global strategies supporting specialisation.
“Manufacturing will be relocated to other ASSA ABLOY sites that have specific core competencies, including Melbourne.”
Mr Peterson said ASSA ABLOY Australia remains committed to supporting its employees through this transition by offering counselling and financial planning.
He said the company will assist employees to understand their rights and entitlements and will work with the unions to ensure the best possible outcome for all parties.
“ASSA ABLOY Australia will continue to consolidate its operational footprint in pursuit of its strategy of 'customisation' and 'specialisation'.
“The company will leverage local skills and knowledge to provide a restructured operational footprint that will lower costs and add value to its customers in terms of premium quality, highend design, more flexibility and improved levels of delivery and service,” Mr Peterson said.
