ASSA ABLOY staff have had personal experiences with colleagues that have gone through the trauma of having cancer, and that is why they have all been so supportive in raising funds for the Relay for Life, a charity supporting the Cancer Society.
A dedicated team of 17 put their names forward to be champion fundraisers and also to walk around a track over an 18 hour period. For six weeks this group organised a variety of fundraising activities from car park raffles, cake stalls and lunch orders. However we wouldn’t have raised any money if it wasn’t for all of the staff at ASSA ABLOY that supported these ideas and handed over their hard earned cash.
Our target was to raise $2,000, which was fairly ambitious with the short time frame we had given ourselves. However, because of the support of the ASSA ABLOY staff, family and friends, we raised an impressive $4,200 for this amazing charity.
Two of our team members who have battled and beaten cancer took pride of place at the front of the pack, for the survivors lap. After this it was time to get down to business. Through the night there were a few sleep deprived and weary walkers, with some complaining of sore muscles and blisters, but all recognised that what we were feeling now in no way compared to what people that are having treatment for cancer go through.
Over the weekend as a team we celebrated those who had fought and won against cancer, remembered those we had lost to this disease and showed that we were willing to raise money needed to help fight back against this terrible disease. We may have been tired and sore but we had completed it with our friends and colleagues for a worthwhile cause and had some fun doing it.
